Liquid Medicine After Weight Loss Surgery

Liquid Medicine After Weight Loss Surgery

Did you know that many antibiotics and pain medications come in liquid format?

Liquid medicines include liquids, solutions, elixirs, syrups and mixtures and are commonly used in patients who have had weight loss surgery. In fact, some medications are only available as liquids.

Being unable to swallow large tablets and capsules is not uncommon following surgery as a large pill may get stuck or cause heart burn before it has time to “break down” and digest.

Liquid medications are usually measured in millileters (mL), teaspoons (tsp), or tablespoons (Tbsp).  Be sure to read abbreviations used in dosage directions carefully. Note that abbreviations for teaspoons and tablespoons are similar. Do not confuse dosage instructions for teaspoons and tablespoons. A tablespoon contains 3 times the amount of liquid as a teaspoon and could result in an overdose if used by mistake.  Be sure to use a medicine measuring tool vs a household table/teaspoon for accurate dosage.

Although liquid medicine has proved to be most beneficial to me, pill crushing is another alternative. Pill choppers and splitters come in many formats.  Depending on the size and consistency of the pill one of these tools may be of assistance when breaking it down to a digestible consistency.  Shown below are pill choppers and crushers.

Be sure to ask your doctor if the medicine being prescribed comes in liquid format!  Or, chop chop!
