Choose Thanks and Gratitude Over Extra Calories During Thanksgiving

One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving and Christmas are all the delicious foods.  Unfortunately, the extra calories and fats have never served me well! By the start of the new year, I can easily gain 10 – 15 lbs if I don’t stay focused on my plan for healthier living.

Sometimes saying “no” to foods while everyone around me is saying “yes” can feel isolating and cause for a pity party.  Over the years, I have learned to give thanks and gratitude anytime I feel those emotions coming on.

If you find this to be true for you, give these statements a try:

  • I am grateful to have loved ones to spend the holidays with.
  • I am grateful to be in better health than I was last year at this time.
  • I am grateful to be wearing a smaller size.
  • I am grateful for the new year, and should I keep my eyes on the goal that this new year will be different from any other … because I will be starting it at a better place in life.
  • I am grateful that I have the ability and willpower to say no when it serves me best (food choices).
  • I am thankful I have more energy.
  • I am thankful I feel better about myself.
  • I am thankful I am making better choices.
  • I am thankful it’s no longer all about the food.
  • I am thankful that I can focus on the ‘can’ and not the ‘can’t.’

Before heading to a holiday party, take time to give thanks in advance for the strength and determination you are going to maintain. Try practicing some of these affirmations.

  • I am choosing to take better care of my body.
  • I am choosing better health.
  • I like how I feel when I make right choices.
  • I love my new body and want to leave this party feeling as good about it as I did before I arrived!

In the long run, it is not always worth what you have to do to get the weight off your body in comparison to the satisfaction of it going on.  The few extra bites laden with calories could cost you days of a plateau in progress.  Take time to pause before eating outside your meal plan, and make a conscious decision on weather it is really worth it or not.  Most of the time…it’s not.

By keeping an attitude of thanks and gratitude you can endure the food temptations of the holidays and start the new year without the traditional weight gain.

And as with all things, practice makes perfect.  Thanks, gratitude and affirmations are now a daily habit for me.  It helps my mind feed my mouth instead of the other way around.
