Obesity and Nutrition: What Is A Calorie?

The calorie is how we count the energy we add to our bodies through food and drink. It is also what we call the energy we use to live.

Calories are confused as something that varies with the person or with your food. It may be easier to compare the calorie to a gallon of gasoline you add to your car. We add fuel to our cars so that they work and move us. The car does not work without it. We are the same. We need energy to eat, sleep, walk and talk. We get that energy from our foods and drinks. We call that energy the calorie. Unlike a car, we don’t just add energy when we eat and drink, we had water and other nutrients. So the calorie is not as easy to measure as it is for a car.
